Bedwellty Park Bowls Club celebrate their 110th anniversary this year and have started the season with an emphatic win over visitors Caerleon in the Welsh Cup. The three winning rinks gave the Tredegar side a forty four shot victory with a score of 98-54. The one reverse for the home side saw the rink of Malcolm Higgs, Windsor Owens, Keith Jones and skip Ken Holly go down by 11-16 in a closely fought, low scoring encounter. With the lead changing hands throughout the game, neither rink established any superiority, but the visitors four took the closing stages and a narrow win.
The Granville Hooper rink were on top form and were soon building up an early lead. With front men Kevin Wilkes and Neil Packer providing the early woods in the head, the back men built on this early ascendency and restricted the visitors rink to just nine shots in a well deserved 27-9 win.
Mervyn Bruton had excellent support from his rink and the visitors were restricted to scoring on just six ends which included a five on the sixteenth. With front men Graham Smith and Darren Bruton in particularly good early season form, the Bedwellty Park foursome were soon forging a formidable lead . Gwyn Rogers also provided his skip with some excellent woods and this gave the home foursome a victory by 31-13.
An early deficit did not deter the home rink skipped by Paul Jenkins, going behind early on, they soon came back and took the lead. Lead Karl Cooper continually provided his skip with early counting woods and with third Lyndon Jones in good form they took ten consecutive ends to put the Caerleon foursome on the back foot. Despite dropping six shots on the final ends the Tredegar rink took the game by 29-16.
